OKINAWA HAWAI'I CLEAN ENERGY COOPERATION

8th OCEAN ENERGY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SYMPOSIUM & WORKSHOP



Under the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Japanese Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry, the United States Department of Energy, Okinawa Prefecture, and the State of Hawai’i, to develop and deploy clean and renewable energies as the “Hawaii Okinawa Clean Energy Cooperation” in June 2010, there have been multiple activities focusing on the possibility of cooperative projects relating to the introduction of clean energy. One of the projects in accordance with this partnership is the ocean energy workshop, held annually since 2010.

Kumejima Town

Despite a nearby typhoon, participants from Hawaii and Okinawa gathered for two days in Kumejima for a sucessful Symposium and Workshop with keynote speakers Takao Kashiwagai of AES, Ross Matzkin-Briger of the US DOE, and Michio Hashimoto of the Headquarter for Ocean Policy. Related events included the 5th Kumejima-Hawai'i County Sister City Anniversary Celebration and the 2016 Kumejima Hawai'ian Festival.

6th Ocean Energy Workshop

Kona

A large number of deep seawater use companies traveled to Kona for the 6th Ocean Energy Workshop. With an MOU signed by NELHA, JMU, Makai Ocean Engineering, Xenesys, Saga University, Yokogawa Electric, and Kobe Steel at the end.

Makai Engineering also "turned on" their 105kW OTEC plant during a ceremony alongside the workshop.
